Yesterday...

four years ago, my cat Starks passed away. I always knew I loved cats but until I lost Starks I thought I loved them all equally. I feel a little guilty about it as I still have his brother Oakley who will be 18 in a couple weeks, but the fact is it turns out Starks is my soulmate cat and other cats are just second to him. I still miss him to this day to the point where when I think about him I tear up. And I still think about him a lot. You'd think having human babies would lessen it, but no, I'm either an adorable Dr. Doolittle or insane. You be the judge! But don't tell me your decision, I'm very emotional today.

Music and gratitude

Lately it's really struck me how much of everything we have exposed Harper to she is suddenly becoming aware of, as if everything in the last almost three years is now all suddenly being absorbed and understood. So of course the first thing I realized we need to do IMMEDIATELY is start our music education program. And by that I mean we have to make sure she knows The Beatles are the foundation and source of all rock music and she has to LOVE them. We'll minor in Elvis Costello, throw in some Stones when she's ready, but make sure she knows her foundation before moving forward. And of course we'll concurrently expose her to Miles and Coltrane and if she does us wrong and has terrible taste in music at least we can't BLAME OURSELVES.

I suppose there are some other important things in life other than music, so I thought today we should start thinking of five things we are grateful for each day.

Me: Harper what are you grateful for?

Harper: Crayons. Books. Mommy, daddy & Clyde. And I love myself.

Me: That's really great. That's a great list.

Harper: And I love shoes. And cars.

I would have preferred shoes and cars at the top of the list, but what can you do.

Many important things.

1. I finished Life on Mars, about 6 weeks after it actually ended. I loved it. And now it's gone FOREVER. How do I go on??? My bravery is what makes me an American.

2. Why do I watch Amazing Race with excitement each week when I don't care who wins? I don't know! But it's that combination of detachment and investment that makes me an American enigma.

3. The other day Harper took a necklace I was wearing, while I was holding her, and said, "I'm going to hurt mommy" and stabbed me with it. I told her that since she did that she wasn't going to get to play, and was she going to do that again, to which she responded, "No. I'll do it later." I think she may have missed the point, but I can't be sure until I'm bleeding.

4. Why is it that any park I run in when there are two or more people walking side by side and I come running up behind them, they don't bother to move at all? Why is that, America? Am I that quiet? Are they, every single one of them, that immersed in conversation that I come up on them by surprise? Should I be a spy? I don't think so, because it happens even when they are walking towards me. I think instead, maybe they're all just assholes. I'm sorry, but it makes me angry!! Anger!!

5. Finally, I must have listened to the new song from fun, the new band by the lead singer of the now defunct (step over my river of tears and continue reading) The Format, a lot. And I love it a little more each time. If I could move this song into my home and marry it without hurting Brett's feelings, I would do it. That's how serious I am about this song. If I had the intelligence to know how to link to it directly I would. But instead I'm asking you to go to itunes look up "fun." and "At least I'm not as sad as I used to be" and thank yourself for your efforts.

You're welcome, America!

Hi, terrible twos. Hello.

Time outs are heartbreaking but necessary, especially when your perfect little angel hits you and denies it by saying, "I didn't hit you. I slammed my hand against you." But still it kills me to hear these things being screamed:

I! WANT! TO! WIPE! MY! TEARS! A! WAY!!!!!!

ONE WENT TO THE ZOO! AND ONE WENT WEE WEE WEE. ALL! THE! WAY! HOME!

Speaking of Obama...

I bought The Audacity of Hope the other day and Harper was obsessed with it for some reason, considering that she can't read. After "reading" through it over and over she looked at the cover for awhile and said, "Is he coming over later?"

Why Laura is my best friend.

So I saw The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. It was just as bad as you would have expected. The good news is that I know who I am again. I am the type of person who would not enjoy The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. There was a brief period where I was walking around as a stranger to myself wanting to see terrible movies. But thankfully that storm passed. I mean this thing was awful from the GET-GO. I must have apologized to Susannah about 15 times in the first five minutes for subjecting her to it. Just imagine what you think would happen in a romantic comedy of this nature and in what order and you're right! That's what happened. And in that order. But let's put this in perspective. It wasn't as bad as that other McConaughey vehicle Failure to Launch. I saw that too! When will I learn to stop touching the McConaughey stove!

I called my bff Laura afterwards.

Me: Boy that Matthew McConaughey is TERRIBLE!

Laura: Yeah, he's not a good actor.

Me: He looks good without his shirt on, but so do a lot of people.

Laura: Yeah, like Obama.

Me: You're right. That movie would have been a LOT better with Obama. He should start acting.
